Microfiber is a synthetic fiber mixture of polyester and polyamide.  The materials are bundled together then split into ultra-fine single fibers.  The splitting process breaks each fiber into a very tiny strand approximately 1/100 the size of a human hair.  When examined under a microscope the bundled strand appears star-shaped with wedge-shaped polyester filaments surrounding a nylon core.  That exposes much more surface area and because of the composition these exposed areas will draw water and dust into the core thus soaking up a lot more water than a typical cotton towel.  Taking advantage of these properties and combining it with specific weave or knit all for microfiber towel to be super absorbent as well as faster in drying off and drying itself.
